Here on the west coast ( Washington State ) ( Eastern side ) Tamarack is considered the best wood to burn. It burns hot , little ash and easy to split. This is followed  I think by red fir. Now for the Question for the midwest , south , and the eastern part , what is your best wood and what comes in second place?

where I am from we like beech best.
where I live now oak and maple are considered best. No fir growing here, but at home it is not considered prime firewood.  Dogwood gives strong heat, but there is not much to a dogwood tree.  When I am baking husband chops thin pine and whatever hard wood is there into "biscuit sticks"

Here's a link to a web page that does a firewood comparison, based on BTU's:
http://www.chimneysweeponline.com/howood.htm

Here in east central Minnesota, white oak is a favorite.  We burn whatever we got usually, including maple and birch.  Most people do not burn pine in their woodstoves, given the other options we have.

My personal favorite is white ash.  I love the way it burns!

God bless,

Here in south central Oklahoma oak is about all we burn.  If we were back in western Oklahoma, mesquite would be the one.
